Dear CheapChica…

by cheapchica11 on March 11, 2010

I love your site – it’s sooooo fun! I need a little help…
I am in a wedding at the end of March. And my best friend is giving us bridesmaids the freedom of getting our own dresses with 2 requirements…the dress must be coral and it needs to be ‘vintage-y’.  Do you have any suggestions where I could find a coral color dress, with a vintage look – without breaking the bank?
Thanks,
Elena

Picture 2I’m so excited that you wrote in! I have the perfect dress for you and I think your budget and bride will love it!  Coral is one of the hottest colors of the season so you’re in luck because this dress from Windsor will be something you can actually wear long after the ceremony!

I picked this dress for a few reasons: the cut-very 40’s “vintage-y”, the fabric- a hint of sheen and because it’s the perfect blank canvas for you to accessorize!

As a bridesmaid, you can get lost in your bride’s choices for you, but with a dress like this, you really have the ability to make it your own!  Depending on whether you want to go classic or colorful, here are a few options for the perfect wedding look!

Picture 1And like anyone who’s been in multiple bridal parties will tell you, the cost of these dresses can really add up over time so the fact that this one costs less than $60 makes it a total no-brainer and everything I paired with it comes in well under $100 as well!

Beauty Must-Have: Burt’s Bees Cuticle Cream

by Jean on March 10, 2010

Picture 5

I’m back with another fantastic drugstore beauty find! Burt’s Bees (everyone’s favorite, easily-accessible natural brand) lemon butter cuticle cream is definitely one of my personal all-time favorites because it’s such a cute little a multi-purpose balm (it has the texture of a very thick lip balm)… with a cute little price tag to match ($5.00 to $6.00 at most drugstores!).

Find it… pretty much anywhere (Target, CVS, Walgreens, etc.), as well as on Drugstore.com and Amazon.com.

Not only does this magic salve serve as a cuticle cream (admit it, the words “lemon butter” just sound appealing), I also like to keep it on-hand (no pun intended) for when my hands are dry (I’m not a fan of carrying around bulky lotion that can leak) and—my favorite–I also like to use it as a perfume (the citrus-y scent is so refreshing yet not overbearing; I love it) and as a hair balm/palm-aid in a pinch.

I’ve also been known to use it as a lip balm in desperate times. It’s a bit thick, but hey… it’ll do the trick. This is what is so great about natural products–you don’t have to be afraid to use them (in most cases) almost anywhere… !

I’m telling you, keep a teeny tray of this in your bag and you will automatically possess a wealth of beauty fixes… literally at your fingertips. What do you use your Burt’s for?

To Crop or Not To Crop

by cheapchica11 on March 10, 2010

Picture 1

I’m totally loving the color and the studs on this jacket, but the length not so much…

This is one of those items that I’m going to have to check out for myself in person before I give my final verdict but I am seeing more and more of this style and it definitely caught my eye!

I think the styling in the pic is throwing me off a little…if you look at the full picture on the Forever 21 site, that t-shirt is way too long and this might be one of those jackets that looks best over a dress and not with separates. Remember people…it’s all about getting the right proportions!!

So what do you think? Is this a style you’d rock or is it a pass…leave us a comment and let us know!

New Take On A Classic

by cheapchica11 on March 9, 2010

Picture 2With a hint of Spring in the air, I know it’s that time of year when I need to bust out a new coat…a trench coat to be exact.  It’s just the thing to get your through April’s showers and cool mornings!

Over the years I’ve collected a few of these styles but they all seem a little dated and in major need or revamping now, so inspired by this amazing cropped Burberry coat from their Spring 2010 collection I paid a visit to my tailor!

As someone who’s vertically-challenged a good tailor is my secret weapon to make everything in my closet fit and feel proportional to my body… and since I know she can work wonders I figured she could breathe new life (and hopefully a touch of Burberry) to my old coats!

We started by switching out the old tan buttons for  larger, over-sized black ones.  Next we shortened the sleeves to a more modern 3/4 length and finally we cut off about 6″ to bring the length way above the knee like the runway picture above!

Picture 1For styling purposes, I got rid of the self belt and added a leather one instead to give it more of an edge! But I’m going to have to pass on the socks/sandals combo…that is one look this girl won’t be taking off the runway!

Now if you’ve got an old trench lying around, this mini-makeover could work wonders on your old coat and if you don’t have one yet, this style from F21 is def. a great buy…and I’m loving that checkered trim!  And these budget buys below aren’t too bad either…

The Hair Guide: Hair Extensions

by Abby on March 9, 2010

megan-fox-2I never really thought twice about hair extensions until this past fall.  A girl I worked with had the most beautiful hair I had ever seen. Very Megan Fox like…long, dark and super straight. I lusted over it for weeks until I got up enough courage to compliment her on her gorgeous locks.

To my surprise she responded that she had hair extensions. I was utterly in shock. Her hair looked so natural! From then on I was absolutely sold on the idea.

If you’re seriously looking to invest in hair extensions, I would first talk to your stylist to see what they recommend for your hair color and type. They will be able to lead you in the right direction…for they ARE the hair experts!

However just so you are up to date on your extension lingo, here is a very basic guide to those long precious locks:

There are two kinds of hair, synthetic and human. Synthetic will cost you way less but human hair looks more natural and you can keep it in for much longer…Lilliana even told me that she had her Great Lengths in for almost 3 months after her wedding!

hairdo_r4_c2She swears that the results were unbelievable and it’s all thanks to the kertain polymer Great Lengths uses to bind the fake hair to your real hair so that it blends naturally and so that it minimizes the damage.

But, if you’re looking for a simpler and cheaper alternative, there’s always clip in hair

Jessica Simpson along with her stylist Ken Paves, have created their own line called HairDo which gives you the look of long, lush hair but without the expense.  These extensions simply clip in and they come in a variety of colors so you can get the shade and style that works best for you for a whole lot less!

What do you think about extensions…are they super chic or far from it?

Rack to Reality: Steve Madden Gilliann

by cheapchica11 on March 8, 2010

Picture 5Steve Madden Gilliann: $49.99

Click it/ Skip it: Click it! I mean really, do you have to ask?  I’ve only been mini-stalking these since they first came out…they look like they’re Gucci!  And you can’t beat that price!

Fit: I just tried these on today and I’m totally dying over them! Unfortunatly they ran big (around the ankles) and they didn’t have a size 5.5 in stock so I would order down if you have small feet.

Shopper’s Notes: I love shoes like these because they’re a buy now/wear now.  They look fierce with tights but they will look even better with bare legs once it gets warmer outside.

That being said, if you are not accustomed to wearing heels these may not be for you.  Even with the platform they still feel very high and I have to admit that they did hurt somewhat just walking around in the store!

The F.A.B. Report: Azuri Pashmina Shawl

by Jean on March 7, 2010

Picture 3Update: Use coupon code WA1 for 20% off and check out their “Lucky Draw” offer for even bigger savings! Thanks Christine!

What if I told you that there is a fabulous eco-friendly luxury accessory on sale right now for over 50% off just waiting to be scooped up? What if I told you this amazing accessory came in 110 possible colors from which to choose? And yes, at just a click of a mouse away?!

When I got a glimpse of the OH-MAZING markdowns on gorgeous organic scarves and wraps on the eco-mega-site Nimli, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes. That was just before I freaked out and emailed literally every girlfriend in my address book (and some guys).

Picture 4

This Azuri pashmina shawl is–no joke—currently on sale for ONLY $25.00down from $125.00 (!!!!!!!!!!). Really. You’d be a fool not to check this out. I’ve already bought two.

In fact, the sale has been on for a while (as in months), so I wouldn’t panic too much, but my advice is to act now if you have your heart set on a certain color.

However, no matter what… let me just tell you now… this is going to be an eeny-meeny-miney-mo kind of situation. Really, take a look at these (right), how can you choose?

Also, don’t forget that long layers were all over the Spring and Fall 2010 runways, so what better more classic way to incorporate a beautiful draped piece into your wardrobe than with an luxuriously soft pashmina shawl? Pair it with leggings, a relaxed, long t-shirt, flats, and your favorite hobo and you are set for the weekend, girl.

Street Styles: Dress/Jacket combos

by Vanessa on March 6, 2010

Pairing a jacket with a dress is an easy and sophisticated way to wear your pretty spring dresses while the wear is still cold. Here are some of my favorite looks:

dress jkt oneIn the first look, a sweet floral dress paired with a cropped leather bomber jacket and thigh high socks is sweet yet cool, via The Vintage Valley. Look two, via All the Pretty Birds, wears a lace dress with a motorcycle jacket. The black and cream colors work together perfectly, and the tights with heels is a great way to transition your cute heeled sandals into spring.

dress jkt two Another lace dress with a casual canvas jacket, wrapped with a belt  is casual but flirty in look three, via Stil in Berlin. A loose fitting dress with a jacket of the same length a sweet hat and cute shoes is hip and easy to wear in look four, via Vanessa Jackman.

Deal of The Week: Flirty Forals

by cheapchica11 on March 5, 2010

Picture 2I’m not a fan of most floral prints…they bring back bad memories of the matching Laura Ashley bedspreads and window treatments I used to have in my room growing up!  But for Spring florals have gotten a serious makeover and this dress is the perfect example!!

I’m totally digging the retro-inspired silhouette, the peplum skirt and this print is right on trend…countless designers sent abstract, watercolor prints down their Spring 2010 runways.

Well now you can get a little bit of that runway action in your own closet for less than $25!! That’s right…it’s not a typo.  This adorable dress is only $24.80 so click fast because it’s a guaranteed sell-out!

Inspired by…Alice and Her Wonderland

by Abby on March 4, 2010

Picture 1

If you own a TV, read magazines or basically walk down the street, you have seen the hype that Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is creating. From billboards to O.P.I’s line of custom “Wonderland” colors…there is no denying the impact Alice is having on all of us. So what’s the big deal?

I started doing my Wonderland research…and there’s no surprise why people have become enchanted with this movie. What’s better than escaping from all this snow, into a world of fantasy and imagination! The costumes, cast, animation and color make this film a visionary dream. I knew I had to get in on the action.

I became inspired when I picked up the new March issue of Marie Claire. Mia Wasikowska (Alice) takes part in a great photo shoot where she is dressed in whimsical clothing and accessories. I was in love!

0310-wonderland-fashion-2-deThe key to this trend is pairing together flowery patterns, lace, bold prints, ruffles, nature inspired jewelry and always splashes of bright color! You want to feel as if you have escaped into a world of fantasy. This is truly a trend  for all the free spirits out there who love to dress girly, romantic, or slightly less than ordinary.

I’ve gathered some of my favorite “Alice” inspired pieces below for you to get a start on your own whimsical journey…

Dear Cheap Chica

by Lauren on March 4, 2010

Dear Cheap Chica,

I just received my BCBG Bandage Skirt in royal blue and I don’t know what to wear it!  Please help me style an outfit for this awesome skirt!!

Thanks!

Tiffany

Dear Tiffany,

I have to say that your choice in skirts is fabulous and I’m so happy to hear that you chose it in royal blue! The bandage skirt is one of the hottest trends we are seeing this season!

72795355-05If you’re willing to go bold, my advice is to hit up a primary color and find a unique silhouette like this top from Forever 21.  This one is a little on the longer side, but you’ll be tucking it in and I like the contrast of a voluminous top with such a tight fitting skirt.

A top in a bright, attention getting color like yellow combined with your royal blue skirt will make your outfit look new and seriously updated.

Now if you’re looking for something a little safer, choosing a simple black tank can complete your look as well. Celebrities such as Lauren Conrad and Rhianna and have both been spotted in this sleek and sexy look.

FP_IMAGE_3702735/FP_SET_3699875In this look here Conrad chooses to accessorize her blue bandage skirt by keeping everything else black…and this definitely allows her skirt to be her main attraction!

When it come to shoes opt for a high pump in any neutral tone for the bright outfit and a black shoe for the simpler look.

The great thing about the bandage skirt is that it’s totally versatile…you can wear this  with anything from tanks and tees during the Spring/Summer and with cute leather jackets and your your favorite blazer all year long!

Here are some of my favorite picks for styling your newest purchase…

Is Your Watch An Accessory?

by cheapchica11 on March 3, 2010

Picture 3I might be a little girl, but I like my watches like I like my bags…BIG! While I learned to tell time in Kindergarten I really don’t use my watch for that…I use my iPhone… instead, I consider my watch an extension of my wrist accessories…like a really cool, wide bangle that looks good with everything!

Which explains why on any given day, my wrist resembles our dear Tay-Tay’s pictured here.  The only difference is:

A. She’s wearing a vintage 1974 Rolex President Day-Date in 18k Yellow Gold which costs beau coup bucks and is so far outside of my budget it’s not even funny…and

B: I prefer a sportier, divers-style watch since those look more like an accessory than a traditional timepiece!

When I started looking around for these, I had a really hard time finding a watch that was affordable…and since I decided that for the Summer I want to add some color to my wrist, finding one with a colored face seemed nearly impossible, until I found this Orient Automatic!

Picture 5For me, this was the perfect mix of style and function and I completely flipped for the orange face..I mean it is one of the hottest colors this season!  And if the orange is too crazy for you it also comes in yellow, blue and black.

Not to mention it also has the spinning bezel which makes it look and feel soooo expensive!  And while $190 might feel like a lot of money to spend on one item, if you’re going to wear it every single day and it comes from a brand this reputable in the watch world, it’s not a bad investment!

Now for all of you that love this Orient Diver Watch as much as I do, I have some fabulous news…Orient is partnering with us for a GIVE-A-WAY!  To enter to win this exact style pictured left all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling us which color/band combo you like best from the their Diver Watch collection!

And for a limited time (in case you don’t win) you can save 30% off all of their watches by entering the code lunar30 at checkout…you also get FREE shipping!!

NOTE: This contest ends 3/16 and is only open to readers in the US.  Winner will be notified via email.

Look for Less: Whitney Port

by Jean on March 2, 2010

Picture 3

Lately, I’ve been noticing that a lot of light-colored high-waisted shorts have been cropping up and when I saw this shot of Whitney Port at NYC Fashion Week, I thought it was a perfect example of this upcoming trend done right.

Clearly leggings are here to stay, at least generally speaking, for a while.  So I’m not surprised at all that they are sneaking their way into spring, but not in black, in lighter colors and in more interesting, lightweight materials.

I know, I know… don’t think you can pull off transparent… anything (me either, for that matter)? You can still pair a spring legging or tights (in lace, beige, cream, or white) with a light(er)-colored short like Whitney does to achieve the same effect. For the right short, try to shy away from styles that hug your leg too much, you don’t want skin-tight shorts. I’ve picked out a few examples below to give you an idea …

What I also love about this look is the mixing of the cream color with black; this is a great way to transition from winter to spring, and I think there are a lot of us that definitely have… some sort of variant of the black bootie lurking around in our closets somewhere… am I wrong?

Pair ’em with your favorite relaxed black jersey top cinched up with a simple black belt (preferably with no metal) and a chunky necklace in a soft color and you’re giving Whitney a run for her money.

Kristen Stewart: Who’s your stylist?!?

by cheapchica11 on March 2, 2010

With all the Robert Pattinson craziness that swept the Big Apple yesterday, I think its time that I gave a huge style shout out to his leading lady (both onscreen and off)…

Picture 4

I want to say that I have never read the Twilight series nor have I seen one frame of the movies, but since I’m a total pop-culture and entertainment news junkie I know all about the characters and a lot about Kristen Stewart.

I never got why people didn’t like her or were so hard on her… I mean she clearly wasn’t into fashion before she was catapulted into stardom thanks to her role as Bella, so she shouldn’t be faulted for her fashion missteps.  And to be perfectly honest, I kind of like her devil may care attitude about fame and fashion…it totally suits her!

12Nonetheless, the girl is smart and she’s clearly gone out and hired herself a stylist to help her look her best on the countless red carpets she’s been photographed on and all of the appearances she has to make to promote her upcoming Joan Jett film, The Runaways. Just this last week while in London, she put on a designer parade of her own in Burberry (I’m in LOVE with the Spring 2010 collection!) and Pucci

and of course, she looked phenomenal in her white/black Herve Leger dress that she wore on Conan a while back.  Can I just say that it’s really nice to see a celeb with an A-cup look so sexy in one of his designs!

Anyway, my question is…does anyone know who she’s working with? They have worked some serious magic on her and snaps all around to you Kristen…you look amazing!!
