Cheap or Chic: The Big Shoe

by cheapchica11 on August 18, 2011

I’ve been doing a lot of shopping…uh, I mean research lately and the one thing I keep noticing as I peruse the shoe section of my favorite department stores is BIG shoes.  And I’m not talking size here people…I’m talking huge platforms, crazy toes, and generally  over-sized footwear that look like they were made for tiny dinosaurs. I mean have you seen the Jeffrey Campbell Lita Platform boots…where do you go in these??

I’m not sure who’s wearing these shoes (I’ve only ever seen these worn by very fashion-forward bloggers and on one girl at The Grove who should not have been wearing them) or if they’re even wearable??  I like to think that I’m pretty open to trends and new fashions when it comes to shoes but this just seems a little too big of a step…no pun intended.

Here’s my other question…are these even cute?  I get that there’s a whole movement around not-s0-cute fashion and one of my fave blogs has to be The Man Repeller (check it out if you haven’t already) but at the end of the day I want my shoes to look HOT even if my outfit maybe isn’t so sexy.

Now if I was going to adopt this trend, the only pair of “big shoes” I might let into my closet have to be these Dolce Vita Jemma Platform boots in red.  They’re super cute and I can’t get over how amazing they look in this pic

So what do you think, are these cheap or chic?

I love big shoes like these. They do look a little tacky/cheap and ridiculous but that’s part of their appeal for me. I own a pair of black Lita boots and I’ve gotten many wears out of them . Most everyone I know hates them though. My boyfriend calls them my frankenstein shoes. They are pretty comfortable and easy to walk in because the platform is high, so there isn’t much of an arch. I also own some ridiculously high and chunky suede green sandals and leopard print wedges. My style is clean, simple, and pretty modest so I think I can wear these shoes without raising too many eyebrows. They make me smile and remember not to take myself too seriously. Now if I were dressed goth or like Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver that might be another story. I say if you like it wear it.

I think they’re cute on some willingly to risk life and limb to wear them. I am not coordinated and have big feet so they are a pass for my wardrobe. The red platforms are really cute though.

Chic! Although I’m short so I may be a little biased :)

I have to say I do love these shoes.. I don’t think I could personally pull them off, other than those leopard prints ones.. They’re gorgeous!

I love seeing the Litas on some bloggers like Rumi Neely and the like, but I don’t think they’d look good on me. I agree with you on the platform boots though, I’d love to get one of those… :)

not a fan. especially on me. sure, i would wear them for my “pretend outfit of the day” as a fashion blogger, but you know no one is wearing those clunkers to work or walking about the city. i’ll stick with my hot shoes!

I am sorry but I do not find anything appealing in these shoes. To me they are ugly and meant for Lady Gaga to use in her performances and while running through LAX, they look great on her. I will stick to my signature quote just because it is instyle does not mean you should wear it.

Girlfriend… CHIC. Those Dolce Vitas are bangin! <3

i have the litas! in taupe suede…i’ve actually worn them quite a bit during winter. i really love the taupe color and they’re actually really comfy. i don’t think i could do black though, cuts the leg off too much. my friends (especially guys) call them my hooker shoes because they are so tall. i think they are just jealous because i tower over them with these shoes on…for them to truly qualify has hooker shoes, they would need a stiletto heel. also big shoes seem to have been a trend for a long time now…look at all the pumps by steve madden, they have over 5 inch heels and 2 inch platforms! it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but then half the stuff that comes down the run way isnt!

I love them and have been thinking about trying the lita’s out, saw them in the store and loved the look. I’m also short with relatively small feet. They look great with jeans and longer skirts (and mean I don’t have to hem them) and minis with tights. I already have at least 3 (white, tan, brown) big platform sandals in my closet. I think the lita needs to join them.

They are waaay too much for me, the whole platform thing seems to be getting out of hand. Although I can’t imagine performer gaga types in anything else, I found these magic leopard platforms on that same site, and they really freaked me out!! aaaack!! http://www.shopnastygal.com/products/new/clothing/shoes/Magic-Leopard-Platform.html

Definately cheap. I seriously don’t understand what girls like about them. Half of the girls who wear them can’t even walk in them and they look hilarious trying to walk in them wobbling all the way!

Hideous! Would not pay a penny for a pair.

I think it’s a fine line with these! I think those Dolce Vita booties are amazing, but the Litas are more of a blogger trend than anything super stylish. The toe on those is just too huge to be cute. However, I do like the look of a slightly chunkier shoe, and having a platform makes heels more comfortable to me than a classic pump!

I think some are cute {like those wedges}, but I don’t think its a trend that I really want to wear. In a season they might be out and then I will have these ginormous shoes still in my closet! lol I think people can pull them off and I will probably think they look cute on them, but its not one I am willing to try out. :)

I love them on certain people! They make a great fashion forward statement and seem to go with certain outfits. I don’t ever see myself wearing them because of their sheer size- I’m 5,2 and very tiny, they would look so oversized in all the wrong ways! The oversized trend works for women over 5,5 because they have the other body proportions to balance the look. I don’t think they are a “classic” shoe, they are just having their moment to shine!

17 Sydney 08.18.11 at 1:37 pm

These shoes do look great on some bloggers! See the blog Mode Junkie for an example – Angela has about 6 pairs of Litas and wears them every chance she gets and she looks great in them. I would never venture out in this trend mainly because I am 5,2 and very tiny. The shoes would totally overpower me which is always a huge fashion no. I think that women who are 5,5 or over could very well rock these shoes because they have the other body proportions to balance them out. I don’t think that these are or really ever will be “classics,” they are merely having their time to shine (and some do – seen the candy litas??). They are fun to look at and I don’t begrudge someone who can rock them, that someone is just not (or wants to be) me!

Personally, I wear a size 10, and no one should EVER being wearing that much shoe. Can you imagine how much sole would be present in a size 10??? Banish the thought.

One of my tiny asian friends has been wearing them for height but trying to hide them under wideleg jeans…still hideous. It’s a no all around, from me.

19 Sarah 08.18.11 at 2:03 pm

I wouldn’t wear them! I understand trends and fashions change quarterly…BUT once this “trend” is over…what are you going to do with these????

20 Heidi/The Closet Coach 08.18.11 at 3:18 pm

I’m glad it’s not just me! Maybe I’m an old fuddy-duddy, but that’s just too much shoe for me and I have to imagine they will look very dated rather quickly. I guess I’m more of a classic kitten heel type of gal.

21 Briana 08.18.11 at 3:55 pm

If you want to look like a clown and Frankenstein had a baby then they are chic. Otherwise these things are absolutely heinous.

22 Zoe 08.18.11 at 8:24 pm

I’m sorry, but I can’t stand these. Shoes should be PRETTY.

23 Millie Mae 08.18.11 at 10:55 pm

I don’t really like them. I wish I could say I do, but I just think they look ridiculous. I don’t want my feet to look so heavy.

24 Elizabeth 08.18.11 at 11:05 pm

THESE REMIND ME OF THE SPICE GIRLS CIRCA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!! NOT CUTE!!! NOT CUTE BACK THEN, NOT CUTE NOW!!!

25 Jamie 08.18.11 at 11:24 pm

Get used to them, they will be around until next year!

26 sarah valente 08.21.11 at 5:55 pm

Cheap. Sorry. Tried so hard to say “Chic,” but my tongue just keeps adding a P where the K should be. CHEAP.

Personally, I love the ‘big’ shoe trend. I have suede Lita’s (I would be on the market for another pair, if only they weren’t so hard to get in Europe) and more than a few pairs of chunky wedge sandals (and I do wear them when I go shopping, for a walk and clubbing). Sure, I admit most – if not all – people I know hate them (they call the Lita’s my ‘monster shoes’), but I couldn’t care less. On another note I have to add I’m 188cms tall, so ‘big’ shoes just suit my body type. So, YES, just go ahead and wear those babies!

I actually own the jc litas and I must say they are amazing. I agree they look huge, but when they are on your feet, they are beautiful, do not make your feet look huge and as an added bonus, they are my most comfortable heels, though being the tallest!

29 Mary 12.13.11 at 10:47 am

I have never seen that mammoth scale of footwear coveted and worn by anyone other than ‘working girls’. They present a larger than life look that goes nicely with the rest of the smallest, the tightest, the most gaudy to be found. Unless the rest of the outfit you choose matches the scale, it would seem out of place.

I like adopting trends in a subtle way. This trend I see myself wearing thick heel pumps. I saw a really cute one at Macy’s. Nude thick heels peep toe sling back. Very delicate but bulky. I guess it won’t be considered the ‘big’ shoe. :-) so I don’t see myself with this craze.

Cheap-every time I see a cute shoe it has these ridiculous platforms and they are too wobbly i’ll break my leg!
