While Proenza Schouler is not happy about Target “knocking off” their ever-so-popular PS1, the rest of the world is thrilled…if you judge by how fast this sold out online.
The PS1 original generally retails for around $2,000…it’s timeless and the perfect bag for any bag lover, not to mention it’s THE bag that every celebrity is currently carrying! Leighton Meester seems to have one in every color and the Olsen Twins are constantly photographed donning their favorite version.
And for all of us w/o the celebrity paycheck, a similar version is now available for a fraction of the price at Target! Other retailers have come out with their own versions in the past, but no look-a-like has gotten as much press as this Target take.
Fit: This bag seems to good to be true and it basically is. It looks great from afar and online…the perfect match to the original PS1, however up close this bag totally disappoints. First the good…the very large size (a laptop could fit), the style, the wide array of colors, and the surprisingly large amount of pockets are all great features.
However the bad cancels out the good…the quality is less than satisfactory. The bag is not as structured as the online photographs seem to imply and the leather (pleather perhaps?) has a very distinct chemical smell.
And don’t get me started on the quality…the straps started to fall apart as soon as I started carrying my laptop, so you can’t even take advantage of the functional size.
Shopper’s Notes: Go see this bag in person before you buy…y0u may feel differently about it. IMO, this bag will not last you and you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a PS1 look-a-like, I would spend a little bit more and get something that will last you longer. Check these bags from ASOS for a sturdier option….

I bought a canvas navy/white version of this bag, which I’m pretty sure you featured on CC, and while the quality of the straps are good…it doesn’t hold its shape at all. I still like it and love the nautical flair it has. It was from Aldo.
I bought this bag, and honestly didn’t even know it was a look alike until reading this! I don’t really follow designer trends that closely, I just knew it was a style I liked and that’s all that mattered. I got it on clearance for $17 at Target in gray. And while it does have a distinct smell, most bags in this material that are from stores that most of us can afford do have that smell. I actually just stuck it in the drier on air fluff (no heat) with a spritz of Febreze and a softener sheet and it was gone immediately.
I do admit that the quality isn’t that good. But I abuse my bags (carry school books, my macbook, messy lunches, put them on the floor on the subway), so most people probably wouldn’t have that much of an issue. However, the underside of the buckle on the front did come off. You can’t see it when the bag is closed, but I just super-glued it back on and it was fine.
Also, my jeans somehow rubbed off on the side of the bag that rests against my hip. They were old jeans, even, but the bag picked up the color after only a few hours of wear. It came off with magic eraser, though.
Overall, I LOVE this bag. It’s perfect for spring, and I’m willing to make a few repairs myself in order to have something so cute and affordable. I’m a jobless college student, so this is a great option for people like me until I can save up and purchase something more expensive.
Most of them are sold out online, but be sure to check out your local store. Some stores are carrying them on clearance, others full price (I’ve seen both), so if you see it on clearance, snap it up!
There’s another fashion blogger I read that styles these beautifully. Check it out here: http://www.dulcecandy.com/2011/03/outfit-of-day.html
Yeah the smell of the bag is BAD! I saw it in stores and was looking at it, and the smell was overpowering.
