The “Perfect” Messy Bun

by cheapchica11 on June 22, 2010

I love having long hair and honestly can’t imagine what I would look like without it! Call it my signature!  But in the summer when it’s blazing hot, this mane can be a little too much to handle, which is why I always end up pulling it back into a ponytail…

Now it’s not like I want to wear it that way but my hair is thick and I have a lot of it-so its always been really chanllenging to get it to do much else.

See this pic above…that’s the “look” I’ve always wanted, but I could never get my hair to stay in a bun for very long and actually look pretty.  I could wrap it and it would stay for a little while, but it would eventually fall out and back to my pony tail I go.

Well, then I met the Goody Spin Pin! This new hair tool does the work of 20 bobby pins- so it really supports and locks in the style without having to do much work yourself.

The key here is that unlike regualr straight bobby pins, these pins are coiled (like a double helix) so they spin into the bun to hold it! Just pull your hair back (you can use a ponytail holder or not-but I do for extra support) twist it, wrapt it around to create a loose bun and then “screw” the pins in from opposite directions to hold it.  After it’s up, I pull out some shorter layers around my face and some pieces on the under side for that “messy” look!

These pins cost about $6.00 and you can get them anywhere from Walmart to Walgreens–and considering the only thing that used to tame my hair was a $50.00 blowout, these are going to be my summer staple!!

Do you have any tips for using them? I bought some a couple weeks ago and couldn’t get them to stay in, no matter what, and I followed the instructions completely. I have hair that’s maybe 4 inches past my shoulders (not straight or thin at all) and I’m wondering if you need even longer hair to use them or if you use a rubber band with them.

I was so excited when I first heard about them, but super disappointed after I tried them.

I’ve used them w/ and w/o a rubber band…are you twisting your hair into a bun or just wrapping it around? I find it helpful to twist into a bun and then at the very end when I have no more hair to go around, that’s where I SCREW in the first pin–make sure you’re screwing in and not just sticking straight in. Then I put the 2nd pin on the exact opposite location of the 1st one. LNK if this helps!! PS: My hair is about 6″ past my shoulders

@Jonna – keep trying! Lilliana’s explanation is down to a T.

I bought it a few days ago and I”m still trying to get it right. My hair keeps falling out of it. I’m not sure if its my technique or the texture of my hair (very slick/smooth) but I’m about to pass it along. Oh well! OH, and the screwing action is sorta painful. :(

I LOVE these! My hair is fairly short, right below my shoulders, and these work great for me! Plus, they don’t give me that annoying “bump” from elastic bands, and it prevents me from getting a headache. These are the best invention EVER!

I’ve been wanting to try one of these!! I was about to buy one when the manager at Walgreens told me that they can tangle in hair very easily. Since I generally have issues with this, I opted against buying them. I regret it in a way because I haven’t yet had time to go back to try to get one! So, is it true? Do they really tangle easily in hair?
