I’m Obsessed with Powder Sunscreen!!

by cheapchica11 on June 16, 2010

Turning 30 this year meant a lot of things, but the one thing that meant most–making a BIG commitment to healthy skin by seeing my dermatologist, going for regular facials and NO MORE TANNING!

I was never a big baker (minus those high school years)…I’m half Mexican and half Puerto Rican so I always have a nice glow, naturally!  But like all women, I look better with a tan and in the Summer it’s so hard to say no.  But what most people don’t realize is that sunscreen isn’t just for beach days, it should be a regular part of your make-up routine and going outside without it is the fastest way to wrinkles!

I have very sensitive skin and it’s been a real challenge to find a sunscreen that doesn’t cause my face to break out so when I started seeing all of the powder sunscreens I got really excited.  I splurged on this one by Peter Thomas Roth ($30) and it was money well spent!  My moisturizer has SPF 50 so that works first thing, but as the day goes by I use this instead of powder–it kills the shine and protects my face against the sun’s harmful rays!

I love it b/c it’s light, easy to use (hello, built in bush!) and it doesn’t mess up my make up like a cream/lotion sunscreen would!

And if you’re worried about spending so much on  a new product, Physician’s Formula also makes a powder with SPF 50 built in for only $14.95.  I haven’t tried this one yet, but if it’s anything like the rest of their line of bronzers and powders, I’m sure I’ll love it!

“Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today. ”

This sunscreen powder contains vitamin A and I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the dangers!

Sunscreen is so important, it’s also a great idea to put it on the tops of your hands – over the years your hands can age really quickly and daily SPF will help keep them looking as old as you feel.

I’ve been using Lorac’s protecTINT (spf 30) for years now, it’s a fantastic tinted moisturizer that comes in lots of colors. I live in Houston so it’s hot and muggy for 9 months of the year, and this stuff isn’t greasy when the humidity is high. It’s oil-free and provides light, even, color and coverage, which I apply with a kabuki brush, and I love the way it smells. I keep one tube in my purse and one in my bathroom.

Love your blog!

I love powdered sunscreen! So much better than normal sunscreen (and it’s super harmful chemicals!)
I use Colorescience – it is awesome and I think it comes out of the brush better than PTR…check it out next time (plus you can buy refills instead of a whole new brush)

Thanks for the tip on dry sunscreen! I absolutely hate the stickiness that happens with most sunscreens and have also tried (what seems like) a million over the years, especially since I also have incredibly sensitive skin. Hopefully I can find this stuff in Canada (it can take a while for products to trickle north of the border)!

Just wondering what moisturizer you use?

Also… what is the brush like? I was just on Sephora reading reviews and quite a few of them were frustrated by packaging that malfunctioned.

i didn’t have any problems with it at all. nice full bristles and it works like a charm–but if you buy and sephora or nordstrom and have a problem with it they’re great about exchanges/returns!!

I use CLINIQUE Dramatically Different Moisturizing lotion–the yellow stuff! My dermatologist has made me try others but I always go back to this one b/c it doesn’t break me out and it makes my skin soft. As I get older, I might need to try something a little heavier but for now this is my go ot!

GREAT TIP!! women always forget this and then you end up w/old people hands pre-maturely!

Great! Thanks for the answers! Definitely going to pick up some dry sunscreen the next time I find myself at Sephora.

I also used to use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing lotion, but switched to something with more natural ingredients (an Aveda product). However it doesn’t come with built-in sunscreen and I’m finding it to be a huge bummer.

The Vitamin A also worries me, but I am surprised to see Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. My dermatologist made me promise to wear sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. All of those other chemicals they’re using now to make sunscreen actually go rancid and can carry carcinogens. Unfortunately, it’s rare to find in many sunscreens that actually are made with zinc oxide. I think it’s an aesthetic thing because it can look white-ish. Nevertheless, looks like a good buy!

Dear CheapChicas,
I am trying to understand how you clean the brush with the PeterThomasRoth Instant Mineral SPF 30? I am slightly paranoid about my makeup brushes being really clean, so I clean them after each use. How easy is it to clean the brush with the PeterThomasRoth Instant Mineral SPF 30? Thank you! Brenda
