Cheap or Chic: The Crop Top

by cheapchica11 on May 4, 2010

11chicks_hot_sexy_short_shorts_jeans_celebrity-coachella41I know I’m a little late posting about Coachella fashion, but that’s because this post isn’t actually about Coachella at all.

For some reason, on the way to the desert some girls lost all sense of good style and threw own the most random assortment of items to get their signature Coachella “look”… and don’t you find it funny that their “look” is basically worn by every single female attendee at the festival: headscarf/headband, ripped up tee, cutoffs, army/ankle boots and some one-off accessory…so much for individual style!

Anyway, I digress…what I really want to discuss is this whole crop top trend and this was one of the only pics I could find illustrating the trend! So my question to you is, do you love it?  Do you hate it? Would you wear it and how old is too old to rock it?

Picture 3Since the 80’s are so strong this season, I’m not at all surprised that shorter shirts are in style and while I hated the tight fitting crop tops of the 90’s, I’m kind of into the baggier, trapeze crop tops I’m seeing out there.

But that’s the key with this look–the shirt has to be loose, so I would consider buying one size up if you find a top you like. I also prefer the tops paired with jeans vs. shorts but that’s just a personal preference…I might change my mind once the temperatures hit 90 degrees this summer!

I bought the F21 striped shirt below in a M instead of my usual S and I have to say, it’s the perfect fit.  I’m also on the petite size, so it’s exactly a “crop top” on me.  There’s absolutely no belly showing unless I raise my arms in the air!!

But I’m no hater, so if you have a perfectly flat belly like Alessandra Ambrosio does above, I think these shirts are super cute and perfect for the Summer!

I don’t know if my abs are quite where I want them to be to wear this cropped top.

I think it’s a difficult look to pull off – and I think you’re right the shirt needs to be a trapeze style to look good. That and it does help to be a supermodel.

I love the crop top look. I don’t have a flat stomach (I’m thin, but not Alessandra Ambrosio), but I think it looks cute when I wear a fitted tank in a different color than the top.

love it! i wish i had saved some from my sister’s full on 80s wardrobe (she is 10 yrs older than me and was in high school in the 80s…) i will definitely rock it, but i agree, if your abs aren’t awesome…maybe bypass this trend. no one wants a repeat of the muffin-top explosion that came with low riding jeans.

I love it and recently got one in a little vintage store. I feel great in it and don’t care what people have said about the whole 80s thing. If you got it, why not?

I like it, but I dont know if I’ll be able to pull it off….I might give it a try next time I go to the beach or a lake…

I think it is chic! For me, only for certain occasions. I have been wanting one specifically for a music festival, which I think is the perfect place to rock this look.

This is a tricky look. I mean so many factors can either ruin it or make it look great! You can totally mess it up and looked trashy or bummy or you can look chic and stylish. But that’s a risk I’m not willing to take quite yet!

I used to wear this style in the 80s, and midriff styles in the 90s. But until I get back in shape, I’ll have to pass on this look. Next spring should be a different story-if the trend continues.

I love wearing crop tops with high waisted skirts or shorts. I’m not a big fan of showing my stomach, but if you find the right combination the shirt can hit right where the skirt starts and you get the cute crop top look without the bared tummy.
