Inspired by…Mixing Patterns — The CheapChica's Guide to Style

Inspired by…Mixing Patterns

by cheapchica11 on February 28, 2010

It used to be that mixing patterns was a big fashion no, no. However as we’ve all seen this season, stripes paired with flowers or dots paired with oversized prints are super trendy.

As I started trying to pair the patterns in my closet, I realized that this was not an easy trend to imitate. I didn’t want to come across as a human optical allusion!…or look like I failed miserably. Therefore I came up with a quick guide to help not only myself but all the CheapChicas out there to successfully achieve the trend of mixing patterns!

00200m-1…stripes can go with almost any pattern!

00150m-1…mix small dots with oversized prints.

Picture 1…plaid looks great paired with flowers.

00150m…and finally, Make sure the color palettes work well together…meaning don’t wear clashing colors

I love this trend! My go-to is stripes with flowers (big stripes- little flowers; little stripes-big flowers), but I’m surprised how well the plaid and floral goes together in that third pic. This is definitely harder than it looks territory, though… I’ll have to experiment.

Great post!

Thank you so much for these tips! As a pattern-lover, I am always inclined to try and mix prints, but always chicken out for fear of looking silly. I’m going to try stripes with floral thanks to this post!

The designer is Oscar De La Renta…isn’t the dress fabulous?

Great post, Lilliana! We love taking some style risks and remixing looks in unexpected ways too. It makes fashion more fun and interesting, right?

Take for instance a casual pant, we’ve mixed it with a buttoned down and a denim vest, which we think is a pretty cool twist on a casual look this Spring.

I’m not really into this style. I mean I would love to try it but I feel that unless you’re a Hollywood star or a model you end up looking like a crazy person who doesn’t know how to dress herself! Just my opinion!
