The F.A.B. Report: The Bralette

So what is a bralette? I was sort of wondering the same thing.  Then, it hit me. I immediately thought back to when I was in college. My French friend Sophie, who was living in the States at the time, asked me where she could find a bra that was “made like a shirt on top” to wear with a deep v-neck she had just bought. At the time, I was puzzled, thinking she just wanted some sort of fancy undershirt but couldn’t find a word in English…

Well, my friends… I think the word Sophie was looking for was bralette. Very recently, I came to realize that a bralette is, in fact, exactly that: a bra “made [to look] like a shirt” so that you can wear it under low-cut tops and have the top of the undergarment show… but there is no shame in it because it looks as if it were a shirt. I know, awesome, right?

We all have a top that’s either too see-through to be worn outside the house or so low-cut you know it’d make your mom blush (and consequently… probably you) or that one Oxford shirt that only looks right if you have three buttons undone. I have a feeling a bralette might be the solution to some of these problems…

Picture 2It was initially this floral one from Free People that caught my eye. Seriously, how cute would this be peeking out from under a denim button-up? And then, after seeing FP’s page full of bralette options, I really got thinking…

Then I found another amazing and affordable selection of bralettes on Aerie’s Website…these have a much more romantic and lacy feel to them, but so cute nonetheless!

I should’ve known the French would be about ten years ahead of us on this.

Problem with the bralette? Only appropriate for smaller busts. That’s a problem for me at least. Probably sounds like a “too many $100s for my wallet” kind of problem, but I so wish I could wear this style!

Good point, but I’m the exact opposite…my cup does not runneth over! =)

That’s so true though, because if you have a bigger bust I think it’ll just look tacky. Plus you really have to watch what you wear it with because the look can totally go the wrong way really easily!

LOVE the bralettes!! F21 had some really cute ones that were even cheaper a couple months ago!

So like a less flashy bustier from the 90s? Haha. I still don’t think I’d pull it off. I pull off a lot of things naturally, but I think I’d still just feel like I was wearing a bra without a shirt covering it.

They are so cute! My mom bought this fantastic lacy one at Walmart that looks like the VS one. Very pretty!
