Cheap or Chic: Red Lips

by cheapchica11 on January 28, 2010

Blame it on Valentine’s Day or on the fact that I’m kind of bored with my make-up routine, but lately I’ve been fascinated with ruby red lips.

I came across this picture of Ashley Olsen-who love or hate her- looks undeniably gorgeous in this photo…

Picture 1

Problem is, I don’t have her coloring in any way, shape or form so I’m at a total loss when it comes to finding the right shade. Every counter person I’ve ever been too has made me look like a clown instead of the 50’s pin-up girl look I oh-so desire.

So I’m asking yall for help…if you’ve got olive skin, blond hair and brown eyes, is this a look you can even try?  What are you favorite red lipsticks?? And more importantly, how do you make it last all night??

I found this one above from Victoria’s Secret that looks really pretty but when it comes to shopping online for lipsticks, I don’t recommend it…this is one of those times to hit up your local drug store or a Sephora!

Mary Kay’s “Red” Lipstick is great! It looks great on every skin tone :)

Have you check out Maybelline’s new line of color sensational lip sticks? They are only 5 bucks at Wal-Mart and have amazing colors!

Hi Lilliana! This is Jessica, in Dallas.. I was one of your models for one of your Fox Morning Show segments. Anyway! I worked as a MUA for years while modeling, and for someone with your pigmentation hair/eye coloring you want to stick to a true red/fire engine red, or for something deeper.. with a slightly brown undertone. Any “cool” reds with a blue undertone are EVIL for you and will look “off” against your coloring. To make sure your color stays, apply a lip liner in a shade slightly lighter than the lipstick itself, or slightly darker than your natural lip color.. the liner serves the purpose of being a base for your lipstick rather than to provide actual coloring. Fill your entire lip area in with the pencil (not just the outline) and then apply the lipstick. Some people like to fluff some translucent powder on after to really set it.. but that usually isn’t necessary. Good luck!

I’ve tried on a million reds and Bobby Brown’s “Ruby” is the one I’m sticking with…not quite as dark as Ashley Olsen, but the color is a really great red for our skin coloring.

Lilliana-
I had the same problem and I went to MAC and tried EVERY red they had until I found the perfect one. It’s called Viva Glame Matte. Apply it in a couple layers with a lip brush and it looks so hot!

Tips for a perfect red pout.
1 prime your lips (lip scrub/moisturize) 2 Using a MAC creamstick lip liner line your lips.
2 Then USING THE SAME LIP LINER color in your lips this will prevent feathering
3 Using a lip brush apply your chosen color red lipstick carefully.
4 remove excess lipstick by folding a tissue and pressing it lightly on your lips once.
5 If you want a bit of shine apply a small dab of matching red gloss or clear gloss to the center of your bottom lip and to the middle part of your top lip . If you want a matte look leave this step out
6 Using a small round makeup brush and concealer outline your lips and blend outward
The most important tip is to get a red that works for you. NOT an ORANGEY RED or pinkish red.

i also have blonde hair and brown eyes, not olive skin but i’m not fair skinned either (?). i have tried the red lip and it is HARD to pull off with my coloring. i have found red shades with more brown/plum tint works much better than the firey, orangey reds. But that is just my experience. My husband thinks I look crazy when i try to pull off the uber chic sophisticated pin-up. oh well.

I just had this problem, and I too went to M.A.C and tried on quite a few shades. I am darker than you NC43 and I went with Viva Glam I, it is a darker brick red. It is matte so I use clear gloss on top to add some shine. Good luck, finding a good red lipstick is no easy task.

Wow, Ashley O’s make-up is gorgeous, almost like a sun-kissed goddess. The lips are perfect. Makes me want to try it…

I’ve made peace that I cannot wear red, either as lipstick or clothing.
I’m blonde, blue eyed and a “summer”. Red looks horrid!

Have you tried layering? I have never been able to find a shade that’s quite right alone. Also blonde, but pale and grey-eyed, but red is such a hard shade for all complexions. I tend to head to the drugstore and try a berry matte lipstick and then top it with a brighter red, glossier formula lipstick, so it has depth. It’s so high-maintenance though that it’s really not for every day!

I recently bought Yves St Laurent red lipstick and I LOVE it. They have a few different shades of red and it lasts all day. It’s a little pricey but so worth it.

I have your exact coloring, and I swear by Revlon matte “In the red” it’s number 007 in their collection. It’s a perfect brick red for a warm olive complexion, and if you don’t like it it’s only $7 so what do you have to lose?

Hello, I am a color consultant for Sephora in NYC and have found a beautiful red that goes with most all skin tones…Icon by Hourglass. It is an amazing, hydrating red lipstick that I recommend for all clients looking for that look.

Hands down Legendary Photo Finish by Smashbox. Red lips always look better applied with a small lip brush. Hope this helps!!!
