DIY: Pearl Bow Necklace — The CheapChica's Guide to Style

DIY: Pearl Bow Necklace

by cheapchica11 on January 6, 2010

I’ve never owned a set of pearls. They were too stuffy for me, made me look too old or too fancy. This project, inspired by a photo from J Crew, instantly and easily casualizes pearls so you can wear them everyday, even with jeans.

You’ll need:
1 pearl necklace, real or fake, approx 29″ long
1/2 yard Chromespun grograin ribbon, 5/8″ wide or skinner (or you can use a bow you already have on hand)
Scissors
Needle
Matching Thread

To begin: Using the ribbon, tie a bow (the same way you’d tie your shoelaces) approximately 3″ wide. Do not tie a knot first. Adjust it until it’s perfect, you won’t be able to change it later.

Then, trim the hanging edges to 1 1/2″ long on each side, either cutting a small triangle in the center or at a slant so that the edges look lovely.

CIMG1955Figure out where you’d like the bow to be. I did this by putting on the necklace and adjusting it in the mirror. Thread your needle, tying a knot only on one end. Flip the bow over to the wrong side and stitch to the necklace in the space between pearls. Do not grab too much ribbon though, you do not want the thread to show through on the other side.

Lastly, tie a final knot with the thread, clip off any remaining thread, turn over and wear!
