Help! I’m getting married next year, and I’m racking my brains trying to find (relatively) inexpensive, cute bridesmaid dresses. I want my bridesmaids to look beach-y, but dressy, obviously. Think Free People or Tracy Feith….can you recommend any stores or designers that might have nice dresses? I’m also trying to keep the cost down to $200 or less per dress.
Thanks!
Dearest Blushing Bride,
Fear not, your bridesmaids will not have to strut down the sandy aisle in the buff. I was looking at J.Crew and they have a lot of simple, yet chic dresses for bridesmaids BELOW your price range…$99.99 and under to be exact!
The great thing is, J.Crew leaves a lot of room for styling, which is important so that as a bride, you can achieve that special look to perfectly compliment your wedding theme/feel. They also have various cuts of dresses to compliment different body types so that all of your ladies will look fab!
To give your girls that “Free People” feel, you’ll need to work with accessories, make-up and hair styles. I personally love these large shimmer flower stretch headbands for $24 from Free People to help dress up the hair and you can even think about styling each girl’s dress differently by playing with belts and/or adding pins to give them a truly unique look.
I would also look at the Free People models to help get inspired for your girl’s hair and make up. They all have that perfect beach-y vibe you’re describing that would be amazing for your wedding. By doing all of this, you will have fabulous looking maids, (but not as fabulous as the blushing bride of course)! Congrats and best of luck!!

There was JUST a post on Shop Ruche’s blog about this. See here: http://shopruche.blogspot.com/2009/08/simple-and-affordable-bridesmaid.html
And here’s a site featuring alternative bridesmaid dresses that that post mentioned: http://www.utterlyengaged.com/category/issues/issue-003/page/59/
Also, I personally like a lot of the dresses on http://www.unique-vintage.com, but they might too over the top for your tastes.
agreed about j.crew – they have great sales on their dresses and the sales associates when you call the 800# are awesome for helping you find all the sizes you need.
also try target! my bmaids wore $40 sundresses from there and we dressed them up with accessories.
prairie new york has some great dresses for around $200 – i wore one of their dresses as a bridesmaid this past summer. check them out here: http://paiduptop.blogspot.com/2009/08/i-heart-off-rack-bridesmaid-dresses.html
Try Calypso for beautiful silk dresses in absolutely stunning colors for the beachy/dressy look. They have classic shapes but modern details.
